Hate and Democracy: The Furies in Contemporary Latin America

Abstract

The article takes up the book by G. Lariguet: Hatred and Anger. Furies unleashed in today’s democracy (2023), to discuss its hypotheses. In particular, it addresses an objection presented to the author which remains unchallenged: whether contemporary liberal democracy is a victim of or promotes social hatred. The distinction between hatred and anger, rage or indignation is addressed and it is discussed whether or not they are passions favorable to democracy. In particular, these questions are analyzed within two fields: in feminist activism and in the Argentine political context of the rise of a radical right–wing government.
