Abstract

A brief commentary on Guillermo Lariguet’s book, “El odio y la ira. Furias desatadas de la democracia actual”. After summarizing some of the author’s main ideas, certain aspects are examined and questioned. In particular, the focus is on the theoretical commitments inherent in adopting a theory of emotions, as well as the risks associated with portraying a monster as the embodiment of hatred. Furthermore, some attributes that Lariguet ascribes to the concept of hatred are highlighted, the selection of certain paradigmatic cases of this emotion is questioned, and finally, the effectiveness of love as a primary tool for combating hatred is challenged.
