Abstract

After critically exposing the central theses of Hate and Anger, we investigate the place that resentment has in it. We note that the author delicately delves into the phenomenology of hate and its difference from that of anger, but does not pay enough attention to resentment. Regarding it, he mostly follows Strawson’s reflections. We explore some ideas related to resentment – and its relevance in the political field– postulating that the phenomenology of this emotion can allow us to enrich the geometry of transitions from anger to hate and the mediation that the moral experience of love can develop as an antidote to hate. Resentment is formed as a hinge that allows us to understand emotional transitions. This idea is linked to the author’s argument. The danger to democratic politics of megalothymia is also explored, offering ideas about institutional designs that can mitigate it.

Author Biography

Jaime Rodríguez Alba, Universidad Nacional de Educación a Distancia UNED (España). Universidad Siglo XXI (Argentina)

He holds a PhD in Philosophy from the UNED (National University of Distance Education) in Spain and a Master's degree in Sociology from the UCM (Complutense University of Madrid). He is currently a researcher at the CICSyH (Center for Research in Social Sciences and Humanities) of the UAEMex (Autonomous University of the State of Mexico) and a member of the scientific staff of CONAHCyT (National Council of Humanities, Sciences and Technologies of Mexico). He is also a professor accredited by ANECA (National Agency for Quality Assessment and Accreditation) in Spain, where he teaches in the Master's Program in Public Management at UNIR (International University of La Rioja). In Argentina, he was the director of the Bachelor's Degree Program in Public Administration at Siglo 21 University, where he currently teaches postgraduate courses and is an analyst at the Observatory of the Future.
